Where Are Your Future Leaders?
Chuck Muirhead
According to a survey by OI Partners, a leading global career transition and executive coaching firm:
54% of companies in the survey said they do not have enough qualified successors now working for them to succeed their executives and managers
Only 32% of companies report currently having enough management successors in place
4% of companies are not sure whether they have enough future leaders already in their organizations
Do you have a succession plan or any plan for continuing when your top leaders, or you, depart? Whether your company is large or small we must prepare future leaders. The best place to start is from inside the organization. You have people, who are committed, knowledgeable, and waiting for an opportunity to step up for you. But in most cases, this is the last place we look for our future leadership. Of the 54% who say they do not have enough qualified successors currently working for them to succeed their current leadership, I ask. Have you looked? If you have and cannot find anyone, do you have the right people working for you, moving your company forward? Many business leaders I speak with share that succession planning takes too much effort and developing leaders is not their business. Really? If you are not continually developing your internal staff your business will become complacent and eventually non-relevent in your industry. It doesn't matter if you only have 10 people in your organization, everyone wants to grow and develop into something more. I spend a good amount of time learning about my staff, finding what motivates them, what their aspirations are and I can easily fit people to future positions….even mine. Would I turn my business over to an employee? Absolutely.
Take care,
